A Tribute to the Japanese Dogs

Animals stricken by tragedy or death moves me to tears. But it doesn’t happen as much when the same thing befalls people.

Maybe I am losing a bit of  faith in the inherent goodness of people. I certainly hope this is not the case.

I still believe that there is beauty and goodness in the world. It’s just that people have failed time and again to prove this.

Animals, on the other hand, have demonstrated not just a certain degree of intellectual capacity, but also a certain degree of affectionate understanding among themselves, and at times, with their owners, in case they have been domesticated and treated well.

I hope we realize as a people that the world does not revolve around ourselves — that life is the interconnectedness of every living thing that inhabits the world we call our home.

Should our home decide to stop spinning, I dream that we have been able to treat life in this world with the respect it deserves.
